In 1917, Dr. Harry informally began what could be considered the first membership campaign for the San Diego Zoo, as he encouraged friends, colleagues, and just about everyone he met to become members of the Zoological Society of San Diego. One of the charter members and most influential supporters was Wesley C. Crandall, known as Captain Crandall. He had training and an avid interest in science and zoology, and he believed in the scientific contributions that he felt the Zoo could make. As a member and president of the San Diego Board of Park Commissioners and as a San Diego City Councilman, he provided crucial support to Dr. Harry and the Zoological Society during the struggle to establish the Zoo. He often consulted with Dr. Harry on research matters, and he would be instrumental in establishing the Zoo hospital and the research committee. In 1933, he joined the Zoo’s board of directors, and he became president in 1941. He remained active with the Zoo throughout his life.
