A new innovation was the construction of four artificial rock “mountains” for sheep and goats that Dr. Harry designed himself. When they heard about these structures, staff at other zoos were highly skeptical that they would work, shaking their heads at Dr. Harry’s “newfangled” ideas. But upon coming to San Diego and seeing them in practice, they had to admit he had something. They ended up asking Dr. Harry for the plans so they could add them to their own zoos.

Exotic new additions to the Zoo this year were a double-wattled cassowary named Henry, who would live at the Zoo for more than 20 years, and the birth of twins to the new nilgai antelope, which was a rare species in zoos then and an accomplishment the staff was quite proud of.
