Tenacity
1927 - 1936
In the 1920s, schoolchildren began coming to the Zoo for field trips. But they had to provide their own transportation to the Zoo, and some children weren’t able to attend. A retired schoolteacher, Anne Zimmerman, felt the Zoo should be available to all children as an educational opportunity. In 1927, she donated two Model T buses to pick up children at their schools for a day at the Zoo, so they could learn about animals. She also recommended that the buses could be used to provide guided tours within the Zoo, a tradition that continues today.
