Dr. Harry (seen here in the center saluting the photographer) on one of the many expeditions to collect sea lions and elephant seals. They were a vital resource for trading with other zoos to build the San Diego Zoo’s collection, especially during the cash-strapped years of the Great Depression. Always hands-on, Dr. Harry loved adventure and wanted to be in the thick of it, and he traveled on many expeditions across the country and around the world on behalf of the Zoo—often at his own expense.
