Tenacity
1927 - 1936
In 1936, several Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects took place at the San Diego Zoo, including building Fern Canyon, Wegeforth Bowl, the Birds of Prey Aviary, an elephant barn, and the Reptile House, seen here under construction. Ralph Virden, superintendent of the Zoo’s Buildings and Grounds Department, supervised the work of 200 WPA laborers as they worked on these projects.
