Changes and Challenges
The late 1930s were a time of contrasts and confusion, as America tried to find its footing and emerge from the Great Depression. In some ways things seemed to be getting better, but in other ways things continued to be difficult. The San Diego Zoo had its highs and lows as well, as Dr. Harry and Belle Benchley worked tirelessly to keep operations running as smoothly as possible. They might have wished for more materials and resources, but they made excellent use of opportunities that came their way. They continued to trade wisely for animals to add to the collection, and Dr. Harry would participate in exciting overseas collecting trips and make arrangements to bring unique and fascinating species to the Zoo. Within just a few years, though, the Zoo would face big changes the staff could not have anticipated.
