One new exhibit that Dr. Schroeder implemented right away changed the front of the Zoo and started a tradition that continues today: the Dryer Flamingo Lagoon. It opened in 1954 and greeted guests with the now very familiar bright pink birds. Dr. Schroeder had seen flamingos at the entrance to another zoo and thought they made an excellent first impression for visitors.
