I remember as a young boy riding on the Zoo bus with my brother Werner Heuschele who worked as a tour guide while going to college. His mentor, Dr. Charles Schroeder hired him as the Zoo Veterinarian after he graduated from UC Davis with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. I used to enjoy making the rounds with Werner as he treated animals who were in need of his care. The health and welfare of the animals was always Werner's first concern. He left the Zoo to pursue research in Veterinary medicine, but later returned to the San Diego Zoo as the Director of CRES (Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species) He remained in that position until his passing in February of 1999.
