A New Chapter in the Story
Sloth bear cubs Wynken, Blynken, and Nod won the hearts of Zoo visitors when they arrived in 1953, scampering through their exhibit in long games of teasing and wrestling. But even bears named after nursery rhymes grow up sometime, and on December 15, 1958, Wynken gave birth to the Zoo’s first sloth bear cub to survive, fathered by former playmate Nod. Wynken was a protective mother, only coming out to the front of the exhibit for meals, with the male cub riding on her back. He soon wanted to start exploring, but Wynken would insist on going back to the den. Eventually, though, she seemed to determine all was well, and Zoo visitors had the pleasure of seeing another rambunctious sloth bear cub at play.
