Welcome to the Waddle
Some dapper Zoo residents got fancy new digs in 1958, when the Penguin Pavilion was built at the front of the Zoo. It was located where the Warner Administration Building is now—and to this day, many Zoo visitors still remember visiting the penguins there, becoming perplexed when they can’t find them! (The good news is that penguins will have a beautiful exhibit in the new Africa Rocks when it opens in 2017.) The Penguin Pavilion was designed by Zoo designer Chuck Faust, and it housed a mixed colony of emperor, king, adelie, and gentoo penguins. The pool was 55 feet long and chilled to 50 degrees F, and a nesting area came in handy for the many chicks raised there.
