Sir Edward Hallstrom (right) had worked with Belle Benchley (left) in 1951 and 1952 to arrange for the Botany Bay koalas to stay at the San Diego Zoo, and to bring many other Australian animals to the Zoo as well. The Zoological Society made him an Honorary Vice-president of the Society in thanks for his contributions to the Zoo, and gave him an honorary life membership. He continued to be a periodic visitor to the San Diego Zoo, and he and Belle maintained a cordial friendship through the years. They are seen here in 1956 with Tuffy, one of the Botany Bay koalas.
