General Sir Gerald William Lathbury, Governor of Gibraltar, gave a pair of rare Barbary macaques to the San Diego Zoo as a gift to represent the goodwill between the British Army and the United States Navy. The 289-man crew of the U.S.S. Floyd B. Parks personally contributed to a fund to cover the cost of air transportation to San Diego for the primates. The two macaques were given escort to the presentation ceremony adjacent to the destroyer, and the crew lined the deck and the pier edge as the ship's captain, Commander Guy Morton Neely, Jr., formally presented the monkeys to Dr. Charles Schroeder and the Zoo. He expressed the hope that this rare and unusual species would be a notable contribution to the Zoo, which had contributed so much to the Navy and Navy families over the years.
