The San Diego Zoo experienced a delightful first on September 8, 1971: the birth of a Grevy’s zebra. The long-legged little filly made quite a picture trotting and frisking around the Horn and Hoof Mesa enclosure with her mother close by her side. Grevy’s zebras are the largest of the zebra subspecies and have the darkest and narrowest stripes, so that black-and-white pattern was bound to catch the eye of any visitor passing by! The Zoo had welcomed foals of other zebra types before but never a Grevy’s, so this little girl was a pleasing punctuation mark to close out the summer.
