Zibulo's mother was Uhtandi, one of the rhinos that came from South Africa, and his father was Mandhla—the male southern white rhino that had lived at the Zoo since the 1960s with female Tombasan without ever reproducing! Finding out that white rhinos needed a herd to stimulate breeding was one of the early discoveries of the Park's white rhino program.

New Era 1967 - 1976

The southern white rhino herd brought to the Wild Animal Park from South Africa had the birth of its first calf on October 11, 1972—a male that was named Zibulo, meaning “first fruits of man or beast.” His arrival was cause for tremendous celebration, at the Park and among those involved in rhino conservation.
