Gainda's birth was especially happy news since Jaypuri had given birth twice before, but neither calf had survived. Gainda was strong and thriving, though, and Jaypuri was proving to be a watchful and doting mother.

With this birth, the Wild Animal Park could now boast having successfully bred three species of rhinos: black rhinos, southern white rhinos, and greater one-horned rhinos. Seeing Gainda running, spinning, and playfully chasing and charging her mother, the keepers and curators were proud of the accomplishments and hopeful for the contributions the Park could make to rhino conservation in the future.

Conservation 1977 - 1986

Another Horn to Toot: March 18, 1978 was another banner day for rhino breeding efforts at the Wild Animal Park. Jaypuri, a greater one-horned rhino imported from Assam in 1963, gave birth to a healthy female calf, which was named Gainda, the Hindi word for rhinoceros.
