The condor keepers were keeping an eye on female UN-1 in the Wild Animal Park’s Condorminium. They suspected she had laid an egg, but they couldn’t see it yet on the remote camera. Then she moved to one side and there it was! Everyone in the observation room shouted with excitement. The egg was too precious to take any risks, so keepers collected it and brought it in to be hand incubated with great care. When it began to hatch on April 29, 1988, they gingerly assisted (left). The chick was strong and healthy, and he was named Molloko (above, with keeper Don Sterner). Molloko was the first California condor chick to be conceived, hatched, and raised in a zoo setting, a huge milestone accomplishment in the California Condor Recovery Program.
