The masked and tufted female that appeared at the base of Cat and Dog Canyon in 1990 caused quite a stir—in a good way! A new species for the San Diego Zoo, the red river hog was a swine of a different color, and she astounded more than a few visitors passing by her enclosure. She would later be joined by a male, and the pair founded a small pointy-eared dynasty that made these pigs a favorite among Zoo members. The hogs’ looks were so singular that the keepers were inspired to name the male Worf and the female Spock, after the “Star Trek” characters. They couldn’t help themselves—it was irresistible!
