Giants and Miniatures

Although they were both exciting additions to the Zoo, the new arrivals in 1991 were definitely polar opposites in size. Two male giant elands were at one end of the spectrum, an impressive, stately antelope species that had not be exhibited at the Zoo before. Males of thes spiral-horned antelope could stand 6 feet at the shoulder and weigh up to 2,000 pounds. At the other end of the spectrum were the tiny hatchlings of the Zoo’s recently acquired veiled chameleons, a rare species native to the desert regions of Yemen that not much was known about at the time. Thirty-four of this colorful chameleon species hatched in March 1991, each measuring less than two inches, including the tail.
