Expansion 1987 - 1996

In 1996, another bioclimatic habitat was added at the San Diego Zoo as part of the 80th birthday celebrations: Polar Bear Plunge, which represented a summer tundra environment for the Zoo’s polar bears. The habitat included a waterfall, stream, rocky and sandy areas, fallen logs, and a large, deep pool for swimming and diving, which was chilled to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
