In May of 2000, CRES hosted the Genetic Resources for the New Century conference in San Diego. Organized by CRES geneticist Dr. Oliver Ryder (left), this international conference set out to consider no less than the values, benefits, and options for conserving the genetic heritage of life on Earth. The conference brought together scientists from many disciplines to examine existing efforts and explore potential ways to link conservation with biomedical discoveries, and discussed how genetic resources like the Zoological Society’s Frozen Zoo could play a role in conservation and saving endangered species from extinction.
