Vision 1997 - 2006

In 2002, the Zoological Society of San Diego and its partners in the U.S. and Mexico began a project to reintroduce California condors to the Sierra San Pedro Mártir mountain range of northern Baja California, Mexico, a part of the condor’s original range. In August, six condors from the Los Angeles Zoo were transported to the acclimation pen at the release site (above). Then in October, the doors were slid open on the pen. The birds waited a day, but then they began to take their first glorious flights over the rugged terrain.
