Here Today—and Yesterday

The Harry and Grace Steele Elephant Odyssey was designed to take visitors on a journey that is a blend of past and present: a look back in time to discover animals that lived in Southern California during the Pleistocene, and a look at the animals alive today that are now found elsewhere, but are distantly related to the species that once reigned on the California coast. Life-sized statues of mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and enormous ground sloths gave visitors fodder for discussion and photo ops. And beautiful jaguars, majestic lions, an interesting mixture of tapirs, capybaras, and guanacos, and, of course, the always-fascinating elephants provided so much to see and experience that some visitors found time flying by—a time warp in more ways than one!
