An Inspiring Education Center in Kenya
Community-based education is a key tactic in conservation, and San Diego Zoo Global was honored to be included in developing the Loisaba Conservation Center in the 56,000-acre wildlife conservancy in the Laikipia area of northern Kenya. The Conservation Center, designed by San Diego Zoo Global staff, was created to serve as a place to bring Loisaba guests, members of the local community, staff, rangers, and neighbors to discover the important benefits of conservation. The center contains information about conservation efforts for giraffes, elephants, and lions in particular, as well as ongoing threats to all Kenya’s wildlife. It opened to its first school groups in December 2017, and since then has become a hub for conservation education in Laikipia for students, tourists, partner organizations, and government agencies, informing those who visit Loisaba about community-based conservation and how this model, with their support, will help preserve the area’s habitat and the endangered animals.
