Africa Rocks Rolls In
After several years of planning and construction, one of the oldest areas of the Zoo was transformed into a stunning new habitat: Conrad Prebys Africa Rocks. Representing six different habitats of the African continent from seashore to savanna, Africa Rocks was the Zoo’s most ambitious project to date, replacing an entire canyon with an accessible, winding path through the biomes of Cape Fynbos, West African Forest, Madagascar, Acacia Woodland, Ethiopian Highlands, and Kopje. It brought penguins back to the Zoo after an absence of more than 20 years, and included lemur species, African forest birds, and gelada monkeys that were all new to the Zoo. In August, the first sections to open were Cape Fynbos, with its Penguin Beach habitat, and West African Forest, with the 75-foot-tall Rady Falls waterfall and West African crocodiles. The other sections were then opened over the next few months, and visitors were enjoying the whole experience by the end of the year.
