The Sensational Don Tapir

Don tapir was born on June 13, 2018—the first endangered Baird’s tapir born at the Zoo in 30 years! When his first-time mom, Luna, wasn’t able to care for her newborn, animal care staff stepped in with assisted rearing, to ensure the calf’s health. At birth, Don weighed 22 pounds, but he steadily gained weight as the keepers provided bottle feedings and round the clock care. Soon, he was exploring his habitat in Elephant Odyssey, getting his “swimming legs,” and meeting the capybaras and guanacos. Not surprisingly, he was also a big sensation on social media—no one could resist that face!
