A Golden Success

In June 2018, the Africa Rocks Acacia Woodland Aviary at the Zoo had some new stars—or starlings, that is. Three golden-breasted starlings hatched and were cared for by their parents, a first for one of the Zoo habitats. This bird species had hatched behind the scenes before, but never in a public-facing habitat. Dave Rimlinger, Zoo bird curator, thought that the open woodland design of the aviary might just have been what the birds were looking for. They began nesting soon after moving into their new home, and they raised their chicks in a nest built in a tree right in the open. Since golden-breasted starlings are a threatened species and not commonly bred in zoos, this success was a feather in the bird team’s cap!
