Big News

2018 was a big year for the Safari Park’s pachyderms: not one but two elephant calves were born to the herd. The first, Umzula-zuli, or Zuli for short, was born to Ndula on August 12—World Elephant Day! The male calf tipped the scales at more than 270 pounds—making him the largest elephant calf ever born at the Safari Park. But he didn’t hold that title for long. Six weeks later, on September 27, Umngani gave birth to her calf, a female—and she weighed in at 281 pounds. Even though Mkhaya, or Kaia for short, bested her half brother (they have the same father, Msholo) in the weight category, the two quickly became fast friends. They’ve been running, splashing, tumbling, and tussling with each other ever since!
