New Venture in Storytelling

Long known for great stories, SDZG had initiated a new venture in 2017: San Diego Zoo Global Press. The new publishing division was mainly established to advance the conservation messages of San Diego Zoo Global and help tell the many amazing animal stories that people love. In September 2018, the first five books of SDZG Press were released, two for adults and three for children. The two adult books were Upside Down Leadership, by former veterinary director Dr. Donald Janssen, and The Call, by former vision and strategy director Beth Branning. Through engaging storytelling, these two books presented readers with key aspects of SDZG’s leadership and strategy developments over the years. The children’s books were the first in the Hope and Inspiration Series: Karen’s Heart: The True Story of a Brave Baby Orangutan; Fabulous Floyd: The True Story of a Flamingo Who Never Gave Up, and Ruuxa & Raina: A Cheetah and Dog’s True Story of Friendship and Miracles. All three were written by SDZG Press director Georgeanne Irvine, recounting the compelling stories of some of the Zoo’s animals. With more books in the works, the series was developed to inspire people, both children and adults, to care about wildlife in the long term.
