Watching Out for Burrowing Owls

To better understand burrowing owl ecology, researchers installed motion-activated field cameras outside burrows, which captured candid photos of the owls going about their daily activities. The photos provided SDZG researchers with information about the birds’ behavior, diet, brood rearing, and what they needed for survival. Because there were so many photos to sort through, SDZG launched Wildwatch: Burrowing Owl (wildwatchburrowingowl.org), a citizen science project in which anyone could sign in to the project platform via the Internet, take a quick tutorial, and view series of images to help classify and categorize them by noting what they saw happening in the photos. This valuable information was then compiled and analyzed by the researchers, to help determine conservation plans to help protect local burrowing owl populations.
