Lynn Griner, DVM, Ph.D., was a professor of pathology at Colorado State University for 15 years before he came to work for the San Diego Zoo in 1964. During his tenure at the Zoo, Dr. Griner attended and presented papers at seven meetings of the International Symposium on Diseases of Zoo and Wild Animals, and he was the director in the 1960s of what was known as the Zoo's Animal Health Department, comprising veterinary services, pathology, and research—a wide range of responsibilities! Upon his retirement in 1978, Dr. Kurt Benirschke said "One reason I came to the Zoo was because Lynn was here. Lynn's help and advice made me persevere...we hope to employ his counsel for many years to come...we feel that he is indeed the father of zoo pathology, not only in this country, but in the world."
