The word kopje is Afrikaans for "little hills," a reference to the rocky outcroppings of these habitats that rise out of the African savanna. The Zoo's Kopje exhibit was designed to simulate these habitats, which form their own ecosystems and support species that would be unable to survive outside the protection of the rocks. The Kopje exhibit included some of these key species: rock hyrax, dwarf mongoose, Verreaux's eagle, and klipspringer.
