Named for the region of the world encompassing Australia and Southeast Asia, Wings of Australasia presented many of the brightest jewels of the San Diego Zoo's bird collection, with some species that could not be seen anywhere else in the world. It was designed with five modules of aviaries to house multiple species of birds and promote breeding, health, and animal welfare, allowing for the best care of even critically endangered species. One specialty of the Zoo's bird collection, lories, particularly stood out here, with 14 aviaries showing visitors such rare species as the Tahitian blue lory, solitary lory, and blue-crowned lory. Wings of Australasia also showcased hornbills, cockatoos, pheasants, fruit doves, and kingfishers, treasures of one of the best bird collections in any zoo in the world.
