Elephant seals helped the San Diego Zoo get its start, because Dr. Harry could trade them for other animals to build the collection. This role would later be honored with the image of an elephant seal on San Diego Zoo's conservation medal.

Tenacity 1927 - 1936

One of the expeditions to Guadalupe Island, Mexico, brought northern elephant seals to the Zoo. Big, noisy, and fun to watch, the seals drew delighted crowds.
