With the war concluded, rationing over, and the staff returned from military duty, the Zoo was ready to move forward with building projects and plans that had been put on hold. New paddock enclosures were created for the camels and llamas, fences that had seen better days were replaced, and improvements were made to structures and pathways. Shipping import restrictions had been lifted, resulting in new animals coming to the Zoo—including a very exotic antelope species, the bontebok (above). These antelope were critically endangered at the time, considered extinct in the wild and only found on reserves and game farms. The San Diego Zoo received three in hopes of starting a breeding population, a vote of confidence in the abilities of the increasingly well-known San Diego Zoo.
