Longtime reticulated giraffe residents Waffles and Dolly moved into a new home in 1962, and their innovative, open exhibit on the mesa was an impressive sight. People thought the giraffes could walk right out, but the moat prevented that. After testing it, Dr. Schroeder and the team discovered that the giraffes stayed away from the moat, since they apparently didn’t like to step down into a low, uneven surface. For many years, Dr. Schroeder showed off the exhibit proudly and explained the concept, ending with what became his famous line, “It’s great…and it works!”
