Lynn Griner, DVM, Ph.D., was a professor of pathology at Colorado State University for 15 years before he came to work for the San Diego Zoo in 1964. During his tenure at the Zoo, Dr. Griner attended and presented papers at seven meetings of the International Symposium on Diseases of Zoo and Wild Animals, and he was the director in the 1960s of what was known as the Zoo's Animal Health Department, comprising veterinary services, pathology, and research—a wide range of responsibilities! During his 14 years at the Zoo, Dr. Lynn Griner, San Diego Zoo pathologist, pinpointed the cause for many animal health problems, working not only with the veterinary staff at the Zoo and Wild Animal Park but also with pathologists and veterinarians at other institutions.
