In honor of the Golden Jubilee celebration, a birthday party for the children of San Diego was held at the Zoo on April 3, 1966. A huge birthday cake composed of 314 sheet cakes was set up along the front plaza, and by the end of the day, more than 3,000 pieces of cake had been served to visitors who came to help celebrate. Dr. Schroeder himself (at right) helped to get the party started.
