The Wild Animal Park was dubbed “the zoo of the future” and was unique at the time for its large field enclosures and wide-open spaces. In this aerial view, the entrance is at the top right of the photo, leading past an aviary and into the village; Mombasa Lagoon is in the left center of the photo, with the clock tower at the far left; and the monorail track winds along at the front of the photo, past the elephant field exhibit.
Guests and the media alike remarked on an exciting switch: the people were enclosed, in the monorail tram, and the animals were the ones roaming.
