Double the Trouble, Double the Fun
Lisa and Lock were a surprise, a challenge, and a delight when they arrived on September 25, 1977, born to mother orangutan Mary-Fred. They were the first twins ever born among any of the great ape species at the Zoo and Wild Animal Park—and they were only the seventh set of twins ever reported in any zoo. This was Mary-Fred’s first birth, and not only was she uncertain what to do with one, she was overwhelmed with what to do with two. Keepers took the orange-haired duo to the Children’s Zoo nursery, where they would be hand raised by their expert caretakers. When they arrived, Lisa weighed in at a little over 3 pounds, 2 ounces, while her brother Lock tipped the scales at a whole 3 pounds, 11 ounces. They grew quickly, though, and were soon demanding attention—loudly!
