In 1997, the Wild Animal Park reached a major milestone: its 25th anniversary. To celebrate, a new complex of exhibits opened, called Heart of Africa, which added a new dimension. This area provided a walking journey, with a winding pathway through dry forest and thorn scrub habitats to see animals like white-backed vultures, okapis, elands, blesbok, warthogs, hornbills, bat-eared foxes, and secretary birds up close.
