Expanding the Polar Dimension

In 2010, the Earth’s Arctic ice sheet was diminishing at an alarming rate; but to engage people, especially children, in Arctic conservation, the Zoo’s Polar Rim saw some exciting new additions. Thanks to donor Conrad Prebys, a whole new area extended Conrad Prebys Polar Bear Plunge to give children—and kids at heart—fun, interactive ways to explore the big ice bears, their lives and habits, their Arctic habitat, and the important conservation efforts needed to help them in the face of climate change challenges. It was an instant hit, and it provided a hands-on way to discover what this world so far from sunny San Diego was like.
