The San Diego Zoo has been known for koalas since Snugglepot and Cuddlepie arrived in 1925, and Australian animals continued to be among the Zoo’s iconic species throughout its history. When Conrad Prebys Australian Outback opened in 2013, however, all the wonder from Down Under came together into one beautiful exhibit area. It showcased not only the koalas and the fascinating species that share their habitat, but also shared the many important conservation stories that are critical to their future. With cultural aspects such as designs inspired by Australian Aboriginal art, a central koala care center built in the style of an Australian Queenslander house, and information about how Australians are finding ways to share their world with the native wildlife today, Australian Outback provides visitors with a wealth of experiences to explore.
