Tasmanian devils had lived at the San Diego Zoo before, but the new group was an especially welcome part of Australian Outback. With populations of these carnivorous marsupials being wiped out in their native habitat by facial tumor disease, San Diego Zoo Global was also joining the conservation efforts to establish disease-free groups that could be kept separate from others and reproduce to increase their numbers.

The strange and wonderful echidna has long been popular at the San Diego Zoo—many longtime Zoo members probably remember Victor, the echidna that lived in the Children's Zoo for many years.
