‘Alalā Strong
You can’t keep a good bird down—and the critically endangered Hawaiian alala are hardy proof! Raised by San Diego Zoo Global researchers and partners at the Keahou Hawaiian Bird Recovery Center, a group of 11 ‘alalā were released back to their native habitat in August 2017. The project had had setbacks before, but there were high hopes for this group. Then Hurricane Lane came swooping in, battering the Hawaiian Islands. Would the ‘alalā be able to cope? Fortunately, after the storm had passed, the researchers were able to locate all 11 birds, still hale and hearty and going about their business!
